Save without giving up your PSL

By: Movement Staff
September 1, 2017

Fall is almost here. With cooler temperatures and changing leaves, the aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg fill the air as the Pumpkin Spice Latte (#PSL) returns to coffee shops. Want to splurge on the fall-worthy coffee without breaking the bank? We're here to help with 5 ways to save and still afford your PSL fix.

Homemade is always better

Keep it simple, and make your own PSL. Yes, it may require more effort than ordering one at a drive-thru, but the savings will add up. All you need are a few spices, milk and of course a few variations of pumpkin to whip up this recipe in no time. You control the ingredients, you control your budget.

These clothes are so last year

It's always a good time to refresh your wardrobe. Not only do you clean up your closet, you can sell your old clothes for some extra cash. That extra cash sounds like extra PSLs. There are local retailers such as Plato's Closet where you can sell clothes in person, but we've got you covered with this list of online retailers too.

Night owl appliances

Run your appliances at night. Simple, right? This may take a conscious effort to remember, but it will allow you to avoid peak energy rates throughout the day. We're talking to you, dryers and dishwashers. Off-peak times are usually at night and during the weekends depending on your electric company. Go right to the source. Contact your servicer to learn about peak energy hours and how to avoid them like the plague.

Turn that water heater down

Adjusting your water heater can save some major bucks. Lowering your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees can save 4 to 22 percent of energy annually according to Energy.Gov. Dishwashers are the exception – they need the heat. Always check for a booster heater setting to sanitize at 140-degree rinse. Here's how to lower your water heater to boost energy savings, and to buy that PSL, of course. Feeling crafty? Here are 11 more ways to save on that pesky water heater.

Save without giving up your PSL
LED = WIN

Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs such as LEDs, CFLs and halogen incandescents. This may be an obvious choice, but we have to reiterate that they're more energy-efficient and tend to last longer, which adds up to more PSL's for you, win-win. According to Energy.gov, you can save up to $75 each year while using 25 to 80 percent less energy with these bulbs.

Set a financial goal with these tips in mind, continue to check your budget, and once you've met it, use part of your savings to treat yourself to a new pair of boots or a scarf that will complement the PSL selfie you've been dying to take.

Cheers to PSL season!
