5 Home Pros You Need to Know

By: Movement Staff

Put these pros on speed dial

Becoming a homeowner means a lot of things, including the ability to confidently drill holes in your wall without a landlord breathing down your neck. It also means there are new responsibilities entering the picture that will redefine your meaning of #squadgoals. Whether you're dealing with the unexpected, or taking some preventative measures, here are five home pros every homeowner needs to know.

1) Plumber

If you've ever been on the receiving end of the bathroom floodgates, this expert is a godsend. Find yourself a reliable plumber who is licensed, insured and experienced – and don't forget to call and check their references. Hiring an unqualified plumber can make matters worse than…well…whatever's clogging your toilet.

2) Exterminator

Having an exterminator in your rolodex (do people still have those?) is a wise move.  Luckily, exterminators or pest control services can be hired preemptively, before an infestation of *gulp* rodents or insects.  Ants, cockroaches, fleas and termites can intensify health problems such as asthma or allergies – not to mention bites or stings. Convinced yet? Pest control is an area of home maintenance best left to the professionals, so hiring a service is one of the first calls you should make upon move-in.

3) Handyman

It's all fun and games until it's a 90-degree summer day and your air conditioner gives out. Having a general handyman who knows their way around HVAC, appliance repair, minor carpentry and electricity can save the day. Don't spend your Saturday making multiple trips to the hardware store. Hire someone who can complete the honey-do list and emergency fixes alike. Make sure they're licensed, bonded and insured.

4) Lawn care

Maybe you enjoy spending hours in your yard every day, but chances are you're like the rest of us with neglected lawns. Even if you're skilled in the art of seeding, watering and mowing, it's still a good idea to keep a landscaper in mind – especially if there's a chance you'll put your house on the market in the future.

5) Real estate agent

Just because you've signed closing papers doesn't mean you should cut ties with your real estate agent. Not only are they a great resource for staying informed on your home's value, but they can probably recommend home pros you can trust, and maybe even a few who will offer you a discount.
