Patrick Bowler's #MyMovement story: Using vacation to donate shoes

By: Movement Staff
April 6, 2017

Patrick Bowler, a veteran Movement employee, decided to turn a hard-earned vacation into an opportunity to serve others. What inspired him? His company.

Bowler remembers when there were only 14 people at Movement, and seeing it as an opportunity to change the mortgage industry game. Although the company was new, Bowler says he witnessed the culture of valuing people from the start.

"I work for a company I'm proud of," Bowler says. The 53 year-old Virginia Beach branch manager describes his experience at Movement in one word: fantastic. He adds the camaraderie is what it's all about. The people he's had the pleasure to meet have influenced his life.

He recently went on the 2017 President's Club trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, a weekend getaway recognizing Movement's top producing loan officers. It's an opportunity for hard-working individuals and their spouses to relax. While he did his fair share of relaxing, Bowler felt compelled to give a little back. "Right outside the resort gates is the actual reality," he says.

In 2016, Movement encouraged companywide shoe drives with Samaritan's Feet, a nonprofit hoping to give every child a pair of shoes. Rolling off that momentum, Bowler, an experienced long-distance runner, gathered and packed running shoes to give out in the Dominican Republic.

Bowler and his wife, Cathy, flew down a few days early with 20 to 30 pairs of running shoes and sandals in hand. With the help of resort staff, they visited a church outside the compound, where they met with the pastor and one of the missionaries who helped build it and handed out the shoes to those in need. "It's kind of amazing the work they've done. It gives you an appreciation for things we take for granted," he says.

He praises Movement's commitment to invest in others.

"We do an exceptional job of giving back to the communities and there are so many things we do as a company to be proud of," Bowler says.

Whether it's an event the company hosts or employees starting their own campaigns to help their community, he believes Movement is doing it right.

**#MyMovement is a company campaign to share and connect significant stories from our team members, homebuyers and industry connections across the globe. With #MyMovement, we hope to make the personal generosity, kindness, service and social awareness of our own community contagious.
